Montgomery warming shelter stays busy during winter storm [Video]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Nearly 100 people are taking advantage of a warming shelter in Montgomery that opened because of the cold weather.

A warm place to stay and hot meals aren’t the only things the Cramton Bowl warming shelter has to offer. In partnership with the city of Montgomery, the Salvation Army is taking the potentially dangerous low temperatures and turning them into opportunities.

‘Tomorrow we have haircuts. Barbers are going to be in here. We have some mental health screenings that are going to be done. Health professionals are going to be here, job placements. We have folks that are really seeking opportunities,” said Salvation Army commanding officer Thomas Johnson.

The Salvation Army, which closed its homeless shelter two years ago, hopes through the warming shelter it can once again reach people in need and provide resources to improve their lives beyond just this week.
