Kansas City-area warming centers closed due to King holiday [Video]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Extreme cold settled into Kansas City Monday with wind chills expected to drop to -25 degrees by 6 p.m.

Normally there are dozens of public buildings open where people can go to stay warm. That’s not the case this time.

The cold snap comes on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday. Libraries, community centers, and city buildings that are normally designated as warming centers are closed in observance of the holiday.

Johnson County realized the issue and worked with Overland Park Christian Church to open the building to the public.
