Inside the historic Fifth Street Baptist Church at 2800 Third Ave. on Sunday, folks filed in to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Celebrating 23 years, the annual program featured keynote speaker Robert Dortch, principal coach and consultant for Jordan/Sydnor Innovation Group; vocalist and actress Desirée Roots, who performed a tribute to King in song; and prose, dance and spoken word selections by the Signs of Praise Dance Ministry, saxophonist the Rev. Frank Branch and the John Marshall High School choir.
Led by Adrienne Whitaker, Virginia Housing’s inclusion, diversity, equity and access leader, this year’s celebration was a collaboration among Fifth Street Baptist, the Urban Financial Services Coalition, Boaz and Ruth and the Henrico County chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
The theme was “Mission Possible: Protecting Peace, Justice and Democracy.”
