COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) — Earlier this month, a multi-agency investigation led to the seizure of thousands of rounds of ammunition in southern Arizona.
The ammunition was found in two different SUVs that were traveling east on Interstate 10 from the Phoenix area.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s office stopped one vehicle containing 7.62×39 ammunition.
A second vehicle containing .50 caliber ammunition was located by the Cochise County Counter Narcotics and Trafficking Alliance (CNTA) investigators at Motel 6 in Benson. Detectives at the motel also found two people. One was an asylum seeker out of Cuba, and the other was a U.S. citizen from Texas.
CNTA investigators, along with the Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, seized 10,000 rounds of .50 caliber ammunition and 19,640 rounds of 7.62×39 ammunition in total.
