Denver Zoo welcomes Somali wild ass foal [Video]

DENVER — The Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance has a new member: Its first Somali wild ass foal, a critically endangered species.

The grey-coated baby was born Jan. 14 to her mom, Daisy, and first-time dad, Kamowa. She doesn’t have a name yet, but she certainly has a strong character — just three days after her birth, the zoo said this “spunky” foal is already exploring her new home and captivating people with her personality.

With less than 150 remaining in their native habitats in eastern Africa, Somali wild asses are among the rarest wild equids in the world, according to the zoo. The at-risk species faces several threats, including habitat loss and competition with livestock, the zoo said.
