Veterans find healing, community, and the Lions at Hero’s Corner [Video]

Reginald Howard, founder of Hero’s Corner, says it’s “priceless” to see a veteran smiling while watching the game, when they could have been alone.

KENTWOOD, Mich. — Just like all other watch parties for Saturday’s historic Detroit Lions game, food was being served, attendees were dressed in their Honolulu Blue, and the noise was cranking up. What made the watch party at Hero’s Corner unique, was that it was full of men and women who have served the nation, and have found community amongst each other.

“I come out here fairly frequently. This Hero’s Corner is a great drop-in center for veterans,” said Vietnam veteran Mel Bauman.

Adjoined with Shero’s Corner, a drop-in center specifically for female veterans, both of these centers in Kentwood are designed to be a open and safe space for veterans. There they can access mental health resources, workshops, connect with other veterans and resources for housing, jobs and education.
