Shelter Area Meadville Seeks Volunteers – Erie News Now [Video]

With more bitter-cold temperatures on the way, several organizations have teamed up to offer a new warming shelter in Crawford County.

The Family Children and Community Association (FCCA) has teamed up with the Erie Untied Methodist Alliance (EUMA) and several other organizations to offer a night-time warming shelter to Crawford County residents who are experiencing a housing crisis.

“It could happen to anyone of us at any given time,” said FCCA Executive Director Jackie Roberson. “We’re all one paycheck away from being unhoused.”

Located in the FCCA’s gymnasium, Shelter Area Meadville is activated every night at 8:00 p.m. when temperatures reach 25 degrees or below.

“In Crawford County, this is new work,” said EUMA CEO Kurt Crays. “We did not know what to expect. Quite frankly, I am surprised.”

Since opening in November, the shelter has helped 38 individuals, with an average of 12 people at night.
