COLUMBIA, S.C. — Thursday evening, as Westinghouse prepares to embark on an expansion of its Hopkins uranium fuel pellet facility, company officials invited the public to an engagement event to learn more about the project.
The event came after the Richland County Council approved a proposal to expand the Westinghouse site, against the recommendations of their own planning commission.
Westinghouse’s Nancy Parr said the company is looking forward to its next chapter.
“We are excited about building a modern manufacturing facility that uses all the latest state-of-the-art technology for safety and sustainability. Our existing facility started up in 1969 and we’re excited to move our production from the old facility into the modern facility,” Parr said.
The event was a chance for residents to ask questions and learn about the differences between the company’s fuel facility and a nuclear power plant.
