Omaha Housing Authority begins Phase One of Southside Terrace redevelopment [Video]

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Omaha Housing Authority is working to remove the last large-scale multi-family housing development in the State of Nebraska.

While OHA officials were unable to comment on pending lawsuits filed against the agency, they are excited to discuss change coming to the style of housing they provide and the type of community they are trying to build.

Southside Terrace’s 359 units covered roughly ten city blocks. Rows and rows of poverty and crime, all wrapped up in barrack-style brick buildings, which are still foundationally strong, but the expiration date on the inside is long past.

“They don’t have the modern amenities that you and I come to appreciate, like a shower as opposed to just a bathtub,” said OHA CEO Joanie Balk. “Having ground floor access to bedrooms and things of that nature. The narrow stairwells make moving your items in difficult. All these sorts of things [on top of] years and years of wear and tear.”
