At least five viruses have increased since the fall: Norovirus, RSV, influenza A, SARS-CoV-2 and human metapneumovirus.
CARMEL, Ind. — In the city of Carmel, where a person’s waste goes may not be top of mind.
“Some people will shed the virus for up to two weeks before they start showing symptoms,” said Tara Washington, manager of public relations and education for the City of Carmel Utilities.
Carmel also processes some of Westfield’s wastewater. Results show in feces before people start showing signs of illness.
In southern Indiana, Monroe County health officials are also seeing a spike in Norovirus.
“I think there is potential for an outbreak. If we look at wastewater surveillance, what we’re seeing is the amount of virus in sewage before it’s treated. That could be an early indication that there are more people ill in the community,” said professor Tom Dusynski with IU Public Health.
Dusynski said it all comes down to good hygiene.
