Media regulator yet to move on big tech firms despite 300 complaints [Video]

The media regulator has not yet issued a fine to any social media company despite receiving more than 300 complaints since it was established, writes Debbie McCann.

Last October, Coimisiún na Meán (CnM) unveiled its Online Safety Code – which is currently being challenged by Elon Musk‘s X in the High Court – designed to bring an end to social media companies’ self-regulation.

The new body for regulating broadcasters, on-demand services and online media previously indicated it will have the power to impose fines of up to €20m for social media firms that breach the code, for example by hosting illegal or threatening content.

CnM last weekend confirmed its User Complaints Team has or is investigating 326 complaints arising out of queries lodged with the regulator.

Of these, 167 are deemed to be valid complaints which are being processed, while the other 103 are pending review. The remaining 56 are closed.
