LODI, Calif. — In just nine days, Donald Trump will take his oath of office ushering in a new Republican administration that has promised mass deportations. That promise, coupled with a recent Customs and Border Patrol operation in the Bakersfield area has led to misinformation causing fear and a call to action across the valley.
Farmworker-turned-advocate Luis Magana alongside fellow advocate Sandra Vargas spent Saturday morning telling a group of community members what rights they have. The two put together an event in Lodi after the Customs and Border Patrol operation about 240 miles south.
“That issue is affecting farmworkers and Latino communities who live here,” said Magana. “Because they move to many places in the valley to work in the fields or construction jobs.”
The Border Patrol described the operation as targeted, focused in the Kern County area, but activists say the fear has spread much farther. …
