As usual I’ve played this album a couple of times before reading the Press Release; and I’m pleased I did, because if I hadn’t I think I’d have believed that this was a ‘concept album’ about a relationship breakdown.Even if that had been the case I’d still have liked what I heard and I’d take a lot from Diane Coll’s finely observed and gorgeously arranged stories, of heartache and loss … as I’m in that kid of mood at the moment, when ‘sad songs make me happy.’If anything the rather ‘modern/Avant Garde’ instrumental title track Up From the Mud somewhat jars against what follows, but I believe that’s intentional and will make the listener sit up and listen more deeply.The second track, Eyesis a really punchy bass/drum led Alt.
