“History is more important than money,” said Councilman Bob Yancy during Thursday’s meeting.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A proposal that would have created a new high-rise building right in the heart of the Northgate District in College Station was rejected by the city council in a meeting Thursday evening.

The proposal, which included a $13 million bid from Alabama-based developer Capstone Communities, would have been a mixed-use, multi-story building that would include retail spaces, a substation for law enforcement, public restrooms, parking, high-rise apartments and more.

Capstone Communities has three other properties in College Station at The Junction, Northpoint Crossing, and The Cottages of College Station.

“There’s a lot of good reason to be in favor of this,” said Councilman Mark Smith during the meeting. “It’s a lot of money. It’s a lot of increase to our tax base. It provides a lot of things that we want and need.”
