ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Georgia Tech Navy ROTC midshipmen piled into the O’Keefe Building Thursday morning to hear a presentation about former Georgia Tech midshipman Jimmy Carter.
Carter is known for being the only American president to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, but he also spent a year in the Georgia Tech ROTC program in 1942-43.
“All submariners know that the only president that was a submariner was Jimmy Carter,” said Lt. Liam Campbell, USN, who is also a submariner.
Campbell oversees 1st and 2nd-class midshipmen (juniors and seniors). He commissioned a student presentation Thursday that added details to Carter’s naval career that might slip under the waves.
“Back when Jimmy Carter served in the 1950s, you had to first serve on surface warfare ships, and then you become qualified in submarines,” said MIDN 3rd Class Max Joyce.
