Alabama students’ data compromised in PowerSchool breach [Video]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – An online student information platform used by public K-12 schools in Alabama was targeted in a cyberattack.

According to the Alabama State Department of Education, cloud-based software platform PowerSchool notified the department Tuesday of a data breach that involved unauthorized access to certain information through its community support portal on Dec. 28.

PowerSchool said the breach was traced to a compromised credential.

ALSDE officials said Social Security numbers were not compromised for any Alabama students or teachers because that is not information the department collects to be stored in the PowerSchool system.

Some grades and medical information may have been accessed, but PowerSchool has assured customers that the data was never made public or shared in anyway.
