Maine State Rep. Lucas Lanigan indicted; advocates demand accountability [Video]

SANFORD, Maine —

State Rep. Lucas Lanigan of Sanford has been indicted on domestic violence charges, according to the York County district attorney’s office.

Advocates gathered Thursday in Sanford, a community Lanigan was recently re-elected to represent in the state legislature, braving snowy conditions to demand action and accountability.

Patrisha McLean, founder of the advocacy group Finding Our Voices, organized the march. Protesters carried signs calling for Lanigan to step down, highlighting the gravity of the allegations. McLean explained that Lanigan’s position of power adds complexity to the situation.

“There are going to be women in his district who are going through domestic violence and might want to contact their legislator to talk about it,” McLean said. “And he’s being charged as an abuser himself; it doesn’t even make sense.”
