Non-profit brainstorms ways to lower evictions in Hampton Roads [Video]

VIRGINIA, USA — A new study by City Park, which looks at eviction data, shows evictions statewide and in Hampton Roads dropped last year.

According to non-profit For Kids’ CEO, Thaler McCormick, evictions in Hampton Roads are holding more steady.

McCormick said, “When we look at the entire year, we’re basically flat. We’re about a thousand or so below.”

City Park’s report found that in Hampton Roads, eviction filings reported between January and September 2024 were 27% lower than they were from January to September 2023.

This makes it the first annual drop in eviction filings since 2021, when COVID moratoriums were in place.

McCormick noted the downtick in evictions highlights the work For Kids and lawmakers are efforting through VERP, or the Virginia Eviction Reduction Pilot program.
