Inside ODOT’s Northwood garage, there are more than 8,000 tons of rock salt and thousands of gallons of brine prepared for use before, during and after snow events.
NORTHWOOD, Ohio — Whenever there is snow in the forecast, we look to the Ohio Department of Transportation as one of the operations that make sure there is salt on our roadways.
It’s a service that takes months of planning before it’s even needed.
“Leading up to a snow and ice event, we definitely have a lot of different measures that we take,” said Kelsie Hoagland, public information officer for ODOT District 2.
On top of storing tons of salt, ODOT also creates its own brine.
“Every single one of our garages or facilities in our district, which is District 2, has their own equipment to create brine on hand,” Hoagland said. “That’s using rock salt, which is the same salt we use to treat the roadways, and then we combine it with water so it’s …
