A deputy doing rounds found the man unresponsive early Saturday.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Law enforcement in Newport News are investigating the death of an inmate at the Newport News City Jail on Saturday morning.
According to the Newport News Sheriff’s Office, a deputy making rounds found a 38-year-old male inmate unresponsive in a seated position at 3:03 a.m. The deputy immediately called for assistance, and a team of deputies and medical staff performed CPR and used an AED until paramedics arrived, but they could not revive him, the press release stated.
The inmate was pronounced dead at 3:22 a.m. It appeared he had hanged himself, the press release stated.
The man had been in custody since his June 2023 arrest. He had a scheduled court appearance later this month.
