Dead humpback whale washes up on Outer Banks beach [Video]

KITTY HAWK, N.C. — A juvenile female humpback whale washed ashore Friday, the Kitty Hawk Police Department said in a social media post.

The whale was found near the Bennett Street Beach Access. 

The Virginia Aquarium has been contacted for assistance. 

Marina Doshkov, the Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator, said a necropsy will be performed on Saturday morning. Following the necropsy, the whale will be buried at the beach.

Authorities advised the public not to touch the whale. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Action, it is illegal to touch whales. 

“Unbelievable,” remarked tourist Renee Kirland upon seeing the massive mammal. Kirland is visiting from Pennsylvania, and she was just one of dozens who were shocked to see the sight.

“I have never in my life seen something like this,” she said.
