First of two minimum wage hikes in Michigan takes effect Wednesday | Business [Video]

LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) – Workers who make minimum wage in Michigan will receive the first of two pay raises on Wednesday.

Larger pay raises are scheduled to take effect in February under Michigan’s Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018.

A Michigan Supreme Court ruling in 2024 overturned Republicans’ so-called “adopt and amend” strategy with the minimum wage law, when they approved a citizen initiative in 2018 and removed key provisions months later.

That allows for the two minimum wage increases to take place. 

Starting Jan. 1, the base minimum wage goes up by 23 cents per hour from the current $10.33 to $10.56. For workers under the age of 18, the minimum wage goes up by 20 cents from $8.78 to $8.98.

The minimum wage for workers who earn tips goes up 8 cents from $3.93 to $4.01, which doesn’t count what they make on tips.
