Starting Tuesday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department will activate “steady blue lights” on all police cruisers to improve visibility and deter crime. The initiative, called “Heartbeat,” was first introduced in Uptown Charlotte a few weeks ago and has now expanded citywide.

According to WBTV, the new lighting system comes at no additional cost, as the feature was already installed on cruisers and doesn’t require extra staffing. Similar initiatives have been adopted in other cities, including Washington, D.C., and some towns in South Carolina.

On Monday, Charlotte City Council members discussed public safety concerns following a presentation by the police department. The presentation highlighted a “public perception survey” that will be conducted in collaboration with an outside firm and sent to residents in the latter half of 2025.
