SUFFOLK, Va. — No one was injured or displaced when discarded barbecue coals ignited in a garbage can and spread to a fence and the side of a home in Suffolk on Sunday.

The fire was in the 4400 block of Coltrane Avenue in the Pughsville area, according to a press release from Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue. It was reported at 6:10 p.m., and fire units arrived six minutes later to find active fire showing from the side of the two-story home.

The fire from the garbage can caught the fence on fire, and the radiant heat caught the side of the home on fire, the press release stated. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and halted extension into the home. It was placed under control at 6:21 p.m.

Responding units included mutual aid from Chesapeake.
