Wilmington nonprofit spends Christmas Day by serving up a community meal [Video]

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wilmington nonprofit 86 Hunger Now hosted a community Christmas meal at Grace United Methodist.

But this event is about more than just a warm plate of food, it all started one year ago today.

“It was just a random thing we did on Facebook: ‘Who needs a dinner?’” said David Scott, founder of 86 Hunger Now. “We delivered door to door and it wasn’t very organized, but we did it and it felt wonderful. And then it never stopped.”

Scott started 86 Hunger Now handing out free meals last Christmas. But what started as a small act of kindness has grown bigger.

Scott said the work highlights a challenging reality in New Hanover County.

“Wilmington has exploded with population,” said Scott. “The job market has not, and the pay has not caught up to the cost of living.”
