COLUMBUS, Ohio — In 2006, a federal jury in Columbus sentenced Daryl Lawrence to death for the murder of Officer Bryan Hurst. The conviction was later upheld by the appellate court, seemingly cementing Lawrence’s fate.

Nearly two decades later, President Joe Biden’s decision to commute Lawrence’s sentence to life in prison has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the Hurst family. 

On Jan. 6, 2005, 33-year-old Hurst was working special duty at the Fifth Third Bank at 6265 East Broad St. when Lawrence entered the building with a handgun. He killed Hurst during an exchange of gunfire.
