Maine has a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. Piper Shores is setting itself to a similar standard. The movement started with a resident-led group called the Committee on the Natural Environment. It was formed in 2015 with the goal of bringing more sustainable practices to the retirement community. “When I first came, this Committee on the Natural Environment had maybe 12 or 14 people who had been on a regular basis,” said Larry Litten, a resident who joined the committee in 2019. “Now it’s a very active group. has about 60 to 90 people who show up.” The group focused mainly on the conservation of land Piper Shores sits on, and they were eventually able to get management involved.“In order to really take it to the next level, it was important that we sort of developed what we now affectionately refer to as a sustainability collaborative,” said Philip …
