OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) –  What began as a simple collaboration on a research paper has evolved into a groundbreaking idea to help the homeless. Dr. Garett Patria, a Michigan resident, is turning scrap vehicles into temporary refugee shelters, offering a solution that he believes is better than tents or nothing at all.

Patria, who works with the U.S. Army at the Combat Capabilities Development Command, Ground Vehicle Systems Center, came up with the idea after teaching his son and his high school friends some basic auto mechanics skills. “I wanted to teach them a bit about autoshop, welding, things they don’t often get the chance to learn anymore,” Patria said.
