New I-26 lanes open in Midlands to accommodate booming growth and holiday traffi [Video]

COLUMBIA, S.C. — AAA predicts that nearly 107 million people across the U. S. will be driving to their holiday destinations this year.

Now, an update from the South Carolina Department of Transportation could make driving through the Palmetto State a little bit easier.

Hannah Robinson, Media Relations Manager with the SCDOT said the department had reached another milestone on I-26 in the Midlands.

“We were able to open all lanes of the Midland’s Connection Project today. We were able to do Exits 85 to 97, where it went from four lanes to six lanes, and Exit 97 to exit 101, from four to eight lanes,” she explained.

The additional lanes come at a time when areas like Irmo and Chapin continue to see record growth.
