D.C. Girl, 5, in Critical Condition After Being Shot by Her 3-Year-Old Brother [Video]

A 5-year-old girl in Washington, D.C., is fighting for her life after being shot by her 3-year-old brother with an unsecured gun.

Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith shared in a press conference hours after the Monday, Dec. 16 incident that the 5-year-old received a gunshot wound to the upper body after “a younger child accessed a firearm that was unsecured in the apartment.”

A police report obtained by PEOPLE shows that the child was shot in the chest while in the living room of the residence.

The girl was immediately rendered aid after officers arrived but was later taken to the hospital in serious condition, where she remains hospitalized for treatment of “critical injuries,” a Tuesday, Dec. 17 press release states. The child was not named in the release.
