Red Sox get young pitcher from Pirates for Enmanuel Valdez [Video]

The Red Sox have acquired another young pitcher from the Pirates.

Joe Vogatsky, a 19th-round pick of Pittsburgh in last year’s MLB Draft, has been acquired by the Sox in exchange for infielder Enmanuel Valdez. Valdez had been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for newly-acquired pitcher Garrett Crochet. (The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is currently maxed out.)

The 22-year-old Vogatsky didn’t pitch professionally after being selected out of James Madison University in July. In college he was exclusively a relief pitcher, going 7-3 with 14 saves with a 3.43 ERA in 78 2/3 innings, striking out 84.

Vogatsky becomes the second minor league pitcher acquired by Craig Breslow from the Pirates this year, having traded for Quinn Priester in exchange for Nick Yorke at least season’s trade deadline.
