Police warn of a rise in Hyundai and Kia thefts [Video]

SALT LAKE CITY —  The Salt Lake City Police Department said there have been several thefts or attempted thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

According to a press release, the SLCPD’s Crime Intel and Analysis Unit (CIAU) found a spike in the crimes. Many were in the Rose Park area.

SLCPD recorded 13 reports of crimes involving Kia or Hyundai cars between Nov. 23 and Dec. 6. However police have limited information anyone suspected of being involved. 

According to police, the crimes usually take place overnight between 4 and 7 a.m.

Police said suspects smash windows, damage steering columns and ignitions or steal cars with key fobs stuck inside.

Many of the investigations are ongoing.

Reminders for Kia or Hyundai owners

Police said there are actions drivers should take to avoid car thefts.

According to the release, people should never leaving a running car unattended. Although the remote start feature immobilizes a car it does not stop a crime from happening. Suspects can still …
