PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon, the Philadelphia chef who serves traditional Thai cuisine out of her Fishtown restaurant Kalaya, is the subject of a new documentary episode on Netflix.
The James Beard Award winner is featured in the first episode of season seven’s “Chef’s Table,” which highlights chefs from all over the world.
Suntaranon said she feels honored to share her story.
“It’s just the best thing that any chef ever created, and I created it. It’s me,” she said.
The food at Kalaya is prepared the same way it is done in southern Thailand, where Suntaranon was born. She moved to America in 1992 and started giving homemade Thai dishes away to hungry people who wanted an authentic taste of Thailand.
“So many white people throw in some cilantro and garlic and galangal or ginger and call it Thai. … That’s not Thai,” she said. “Spice never killed anybody.”
Suntaranon opened Kalaya in 2019 in South Philly and relocated the fine-dining establishment …
