SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – A nearly 400-acre development may be coming to Southport, however, the plan is not new to residents.
Formally known as Project Indigo, developers Bald Head Island Limited and East West Partners are bringing the plans back to the city under a new name, the Waterways Community.
This time around, the project would be slightly smaller, dropping the original 1,500 housing units down to 1,100, including 400 single-family lots, 200 cottages/duplexes/townhomes, and 500 multifamily units.
Located off Robert Ruark Drive, West 9th Street and Indigo Plantation Drive, near Southport Elementary School, the development would also include 100,000 square feet of commercial use.
Back in 2022, Southport’s Planning Board did not recommend the zoning approval after complaints by some residents. The project would have doubled the population of Southport.
However, much has changed in Southport over the past two years, including city leaders’ feelings towards the development.
