CM Punk shocked the wrestling world when he made his return to WWE at Survivor Series last year.
The 46-year-old, who had spent the preceding two years with rival promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW), had vowed never to return after an acrimonious split from the company in 2014.
He walked out after the Royal Rumble event a decade ago, and was later sent his termination papers on his wedding day – an incident former WWE chairman Vince McMahon claimed was purely coincidental.
Punk, who is one of the most outspoken figures in the industry, announced his retirement later that year and was then involved in a long-running legal dispute against WWE doctor Chris Amann.
He made no secret of his soured relationship with McMahon, and took plenty of public shots at him and the company over the years.
