Nebraska still leading B1G in blood drive competition [Video]

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – While the Huskers won on the football field on Saturday, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been leading the Big Ten Conference in another competition.

The “We Give Blood Drive” pits the 18 schools from the conference against one another to see who can bring in the most blood donations. The winning school will receive $1 million to advance student or community health.

Nebraska currently leads by more than 1,600 donations, having saved an estimated 10,000 lives so far.

“Nebraskans I think just have really big hearts, they really care about their community,” said Ellen Wichman, Abbott. “They have been showing up since the early days of the competition, so that has been really exciting to see. We’re also in the middle of a U.S. blood shortage, so it’s really critical that people get out and donate.”
