OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Around 20 East Tennessee officers are enrolled in a three-day Spanish course at Oak Ridge’s Law Enforcement Innovation Center (LEIC).
The class aims to teach officers essential Spanish phrases, lowering the chance language barriers get in the way of policing. The program is being offered thanks to a partnership with the Tennessee Language Center (TLC).

“Our goal with Spanish for Law Enforcement is to provide officers with practical tools that have a direct, positive impact on community relations and safety,” said Dr. C. Brian Barnett, Director of World Languages at TLC. “This program provides a foundation in basic Spanish as well as builds awareness of cultural differences when working with the Spanish-speaking community.”
So far, officers from several East Tennessee agencies are slated to participate, including officers from:
