DA calls on NERSA to reject Eskom’s 40% price hike proposal [Video]

This morning, the Democratic Alliance (DA) protested against Eskom’s proposed 40% tariff increase for the cost of electricity outside Cresta Grande, where the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) public hearing took place, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The party highlighted the rising cost of living and noted that, according to Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, 4% inflation would make electricity less affordable for citizens.

Taking to the podium, Federal Chairperson Dr Ivan Meyer announced that every DA mayor across South Africa has also rejected the proposed price hike.

Dr Meyer criticised Eskom’s proposed tariff hike as unaffordable, warning that it will burden South Africans with impossible choices between essentials like water, food and electricity.

He cautioned that the increase would shut down businesses, drive up inflation and escalate living costs, calling Eskom’s staggering 1 700% rise in tariffs over three decades a ‘corruption tax’.
