New Mexico House representatives choose their leadership [Video]

Both New Mexico’s House Republicans and Democrats chose their leadership roles ahead of the legislative session. Both sides want to tackle many things, including crime. They said it’s possible with their diverse leadership. “We not only have members of leadership that are from northern New Mexico, central New Mexico and southern New Mexico, but also in our gender and racial identity,” said Javier Martinez, Democratic House speaker. He said the majority of their seats are held by women and people of color. The Republicans appointed Gail Armstrong as their House leader. They said this is the first woman elected to be a leader in the Republican caucus. “I’m excited. We have a great time right now in our caucus, and I’m just excited to get the ball rolling and move forward,” Armstrong said.
