Watch textile designer Molly Mahon’s home tour with House Beautiful, just in time for Christmas. Known for her brightly patterned hand-block-printed fabrics, Molly has created a welcoming family home at Deerhyrst Cottage in East Sussex.

Molly’s preference for beautiful, bright, bold colours is evident in her sitting room, where she’s created a warm and inviting space. A grown-up, muted pink on the walls, beautiful patterned textiles (inspired by nature, India and her home in the Sussex countryside), and the objects on the mantelpiece make for a delightful decorating scheme.

Molly shares some of her favourite looks for the festive season, including how she’s decorated the Christmas tree with dried marigold garlands from India, bows with strips of fabric, and twinkling fairy lights for a finishing touch. Presents have been wrapped in block-printed papers with rich jewel-coloured ribbons, and the fireplace is adorned with dried flowers for a visually striking focal point that also brings in a lovely scent from the outdoors.

In what she calls a ‘visual feast’, Molly talks through her Christmas tablescape: A blue tablecloth, lots of candles, brass candle holders, patterned napkins, fabric crackers, dried flowers, and fruit in bowls create a layered look. ‘I’m really loving the opulent colours that you get from India,’ she says. ‘It’s that regal majesticness and deep, dark reds and oranges.’

It’s also about hunkering down at this time of year, so Molly takes us on a tour of her bedroom and shows us the wall hanging above her bed that adds warmth during winter. We also take a look at her beloved studio: ‘It’s probably the most special place at Deerhyrst for me. It’s a lovely, calm haven where I have no wifi or computers. I am just here to create and to print. I am never more happy then when I’m block printing, so it’s a lovely place to be.’
