President-elect Trump picks Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general; Gaetz resigns from Congress [Video]

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President-elect Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to serve as U.S. attorney general and shortly afterward, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said that the congressman had resigned.

“Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Speaker Johnson announced that Gaetz had resigned from Congress later in the evening at a press conference after the Republican House leadership vote.

“I think out of deference to us, he issued his resignation letter, effective immediately, of Congress. That caught us by surprise a little bit,” said Speaker Johnson.

Trump’s decision to nominate Gaetz came as a surprise to some people in Washington. Gaetz has been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged sexual misconduct. He was also previously under investigation by the Justice Department but …
