Preliminary data from the Virginia Department of Elections on Wednesday showed Avula had won in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th districts and had a total of 44,832 votes, or 46%.

If Trump’s win portends the demise of democracy as we know it or the end of the global post-World War II order, Avula’s status as Richmond’s first Asian mayor-elect represents a significant break from the Black-white binary that until recently not only defined Richmond politics, but Richmond itself.
