BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The California based Urban Alchemy team will soon begin their effort to help the unhoused, formerly incarcerated, and mentally ill in Birmingham.
Birmingham city councilors agreed to partner with Urban Alchemy in this effort, and Wednesday, the non-profit hosted a job fair to build their team.

The Homeless Engagement Assistance Response Team, or HEART team, will respond to situations involving the unhoused population. They will work to deescalate any conflicts and connect people in crisis to resources such as shelter and medical care.
“Today represents go time, like really moving forward from being an idea or being a proposal or being something that has to pass through council. To being something that is happening right here on the ground with folks that are from right here in the community,” said Kirkpatrick Tyler, Urban Alchemy’s Chief of Government and Community Affairs.
