ASU PhD student works on Alzheimers outreach for Latinos [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is this weekend in downtown Phoenix and Arizona’s Family is once again a proud sponsor, helping raise money and awareness for research and support for Arizona families.

The South and Southwest have the fastest growth rate for Alzheimer’s in the country.

Getting involved this weekend is a personal mission for one ASU student who is dedicating her Ph.D. to fighting this unforgiving disease.

Alma Manzo is a community educator for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Desert Southwest Chapter and a fourth year Ph.D. student at the Edson College of Nursing & Health Innovation at Arizona State University.

She just presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International conference in Philadelphia, where she discussed navigating cultural nuances and understanding and addressing challenges for Latino caregivers.

“In the Latino community, it’s incredibly hard to get a diagnosis,” Manzo said.

A 2016 study from USC shows Latinos are the biggest and the youngest minority group in America. …
