In this excerpt from the Gibson Gear Guide interview with Joe Bonamassa, Joe gives you some incredible Les Paul tone tips yet again, this time, he’s teaching you how to get the legendary “woman tone,” famously used by Eric Clapton, with his new signature 1955 Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Watch as Joe takes you step-by-step through the process of dialling in his Les Paul to help you get this iconic tone.
So how do you get the “woman tone” or “woman sound” on guitar?
Here’s how you get the “woman tone,”: start by switching to the front (neck) pickup on your Les Paul. Then, crank the amp for that rich, saturated tube-driven sound. For the tone control, roll the knob down to about 3, but Joe notes that you’ll need to “season to taste” because not all tone pots behave the same. This small adjustment is key to creating that smooth, creamy tone Clapton made famous.
Joe also shares additional insights, such as how all Les Pauls have a natural “poke” in their tone, which can be tamed by rolling back the volume to around 8.5 or 9. This helps reduce harshness while maintaining the dynamic punch of the guitar. Depending on the stage or venue, Joe suggests you may need to adjust your tone to suit darker or brighter settings for optimal sound.
Watch as Joe provides tips on how to dial in your Les Paul to help you master the “woman tone”, as well as insights into how he uses these techniques in live performances. Whether you’re looking to channel Clapton’s style or find your own voice on the Les Paul, this video is packed with essential advice for guitarists of all levels and incredible Les Paul tone tips!
