Gretna man working to make kick-lock invention comply with regulations [Video]

GRETNA, Neb. (WOWT) – Gretna-based business Extreme Iron Works owner Dave Cotton says his kick lock device for inward-swinging doors is like an extra lock.

He and his son Kyle say it can provide an extra layer of security during a school shooting.

“The main thing that our locking device would do is buy more time for first responders to get there and handle the situation,” Kyle said.

The Cottons told 6 News they’ve already sold a couple to an Omaha metro school.

But an internet search shows there are several similar devices out there, and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office told 6 News many of them don’t meet fire codes, such as for easy exits.

One scenario they’re concerned about is an intruder entering through a classroom window while such a locking device is in place, making a quick and simple exit for students and staff difficult.
