It’s a crisis affecting the Native American community in New Mexico and across the country, the amount of indigenous people who go missing or are murdered.According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, there’s roughly 4,200 missing and murdered cases that are unsolved. The CDC reports homicide is the fifth leading cause of death of American Indian and Alaska Native women between the ages of 25 and 34.In New Mexico, KOAT has interviewed several families who are still searching for their loved ones or waiting for answers from investigators after their family member was killed. Some are members on a newly formed MMIP task force formed by the New Mexico Department of Justice.
