GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turned 75! So to celebrate, we’re opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
In October 2007, North Carolina was in the middle of the state’s worst drought on record.
At one point, 79% of water customers across the state — more than 5 million people — faced water restrictions.
Many of the restrictions included outright bans on outdoor water use for homes and businesses.
Here in the Triad, leaders implemented “Operation Halve It”.
It encouraged people to cut their water use in half.
They stressed an easy way to cut water use was to find water leaks.
Experts said water leaks could amount to 15% of a household’s water use.
The good news was that leaking sinks and toilets could be repaired simply for less than $20.
