Suspect killed by Ravenna officers on hiking trail was wielding ax, police said [Video]

RAVENNA, Ohio (WJW) – One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting on a hiking trail in Ravenna late Tuesday morning.

According to a press release from the City of Ravenna Police Department, an officer was involved in the fatal shooting on the Portage County Hike and Bike Trail at about 11:45 a.m.

Ravenna officers responded to a report of stabbing on the trail. While tending to the victim, the alleged suspect approached with an ax. The suspect ignored officers’ commands to drop the ax and continued advancing. The officers then opened fire.

The suspect was identified as 43-year-old Matthew James Fries in a Tuesday evening update from police. He was reportedly homeless.

Officers were not injured in the incident, authorities said.

The hike and bike trail has been closed between Freedom Street and Loomis Parkway until further notice, according to the release.
