Wear purple day raises awareness and support for survivors of Domestic Violence [Video]

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – Oct. 17 is Domestic Violence Awareness Day also known as Wear Purple Day.

It’s a day to raise awareness of the issue, support survivors and honor lives lost.

To honor survivors, people all over the world wear purple which symbolizes peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to awareness.

Partners for Peace is one of many organizations in Maine supporting, advocating, and educating communities on domestic violence.

The community education program manager says she’s learned so much more about the issue and she along with her colleagues hope to open the minds of others as well.

“We know that domestic violence can happen to any type of person in any relationship with any partner,” said Katie Shepard. “There’s no one type of person who experiences domestic violence, so we might think that it’s only happening to certain folks, we might think it’s only happening to women for example.
